    The Nissan R383.

    The development of the new machine was launched to have the possibility for the Nissan factory team to win a third time in 1970, after the R381's victory in 1968 and the R382's in 1969. The engine would be the same as seen in the previous R382 (GRX-III; V12, DOHC, 5954cc), exceeding 700bhp. It would be 900bhp in the turbocharged specs for races of the CAN-AM series that it was deemed to participate in.

    The R383 borrowed styling cues heavily seen on Can-Am cars running the Group 7 formula in North America.

    Nissan mostly concentrated on developing the aerodynamics with a primary focus on how much downforce the car would be able to create. The venting on the nose of the R382 was removed, leaving the entire frontal area of the R383 flattened, producing a more prominent wedge design. This meant that the car's radiators were relocated to the sides of the car, with large vents placed in the car's doors. The air intake for the V12 engine was also aerodynamically redesigned, now being placed below the rollbar to allow more air to the rear wing and slightly off-center of the cockpit to avoid the driver's helmet blocking the intake.

    But the 1969 Japanese Grand Prix with the Group 7, two-seater machines would be the last after the withdrawal of Toyota, Nissan, and privateer Taki (Taki Racing Team), also known as TNT.

    On June 8th, 1970, Nissan had announced that they would not participate in the Grand Prix as they were changing their approach to focus on tackling pollution and safety issues. Toyota, which had lost their rival, therefore, followed suit, and that was that.

    That being said, the development of the R383 was continued for its possible participation in Can-Am. The first car was completed in August of 1970. Toyota, which had decided to participate in Can-Am, abandoned the idea completely due to a fatal testing accident in August involving Minoru Kawai at Suzuka and that changed Nissan's intentions completely.

    On September 21st, 1970, the development of the R383 was officially discontinued.

    The Japanese Grand Prix came back in 1971, completely rehauled where they ran touring cars instead like the Skyline 2000GT-R KPGC10 but as for the main event, they ran Formula 2000 machines with the support races being two Touring car events (TS-A & TS-B), the Grand Touring Car race (GTS) and Formula Junior.

    The R383 was stored without running even once, until was shown to the press in 1976, sporting a clean plain white look, six years later. It then was opened to the public in the form of a reference exhibit at the 22nd Tokyo Motor Show the following year.

    This car was restored to the drivable condition like the other R38x series cars and demonstrated its first run at NISMO FESTIVAL in 2006 after 36 years since it was developed.
